Batopilas is a hidden treasure which does take some effort to get to. The town was founded in the early 1700s and was a hub for silver mining in the canyon. It is also home to the Tarahumara Indians who are indigenous to this area. I had a relaxed morning exploring this well preserved town. It's not that big so I made several laps before anything opened. At breakfast, an elderly Tarahumara man wearing tradition dress came into the restaurant and was offered a cup of coffee by the proprietor. He sat quietly and enjoyed his coffee (which I am all about). When he finish his coffee he walked over to offer me his hand and gave me a very gentle two fingered handshake. Then he grinned and walked out. Lol! I just love that! Leaving Batopilas, again I had to ride through Juanitas living room on my way to the street. I got to reverse ride my route that I had done in the dark and you know what! It wasn't that scary after all. Beautiful and fun. The rest of the day I rode across a high plateau featuring intermittent pine trees and distant views of the Sierra Madres. I ended my day in Hidalgo Del Parral. As early as 1567, Parral has had an active silver mine. Dang those Spaniards were busy! I'm staying in a historic hotel in the old part of the city. I arrived just before dark so I will walk around and explore ore in the morning.
