My ferry didn't depart until 11PM so I had a chill day cleaning gear and doing some maintenance on the bike. I packed up and headed to La Paz as it was getting dark. I stopped along the Malecon in La Paz to watch the sunset and enjoy all of the people out walking, running, skateboarding, rollerblading and bicycling. I was shocked to see over 20 large boats sunk in the marina due to the hurricane that hit here 2 weeks ago. At 7:30, I drove out to the ferry dock which is about 10 miles out of La Paz. In an exercise of "go with the flow", navigating the boarding process was humorously confusing. It was pitch black dark, there were no signs, no lines on the road showing where to go and no workers pointing me to where I should be going. There were five checkpoints for different paperwork and inspections, none of which were apparent. Some of them were even inside unmarked buildings. Fortunately I managed to look lost enough for random people to give me a friendly wave or a nod and that kept me going in the right direction. I did attempt to roll up on to the ferry ramp before I was supposed to and was promptly scolded by a dock worker. He had me back up and turn around at which time I saw where I was supposed to park to wait. Which I did. When finally called to board, I was directed up a series of ramps to the third deck where I strapped the bike down with several other motorcycles. That complete I was directed to the cafeteria on the top deck. It was a party up there. I felt like I had crashed someone's wedding reception. There was live music and lots of yummy food. Everyone looked like they were having such a good time. I had a big plate of food which someone handed me and just enjoyed the scene for a while. At about 11:30 PM we finally departed and I went back to the salon to find a seat. I put in my earbuds and covered my eyes with my scarf. I actually slept pretty well considering. At 6 AM I woke up and went back to the cafeteria where I was treated to coffee and Mexican pastries. I went out on the deck to watch our approach into Topolombampo. Two large tugboats assisted in turning the huge ferry stern-first into the dock. I watched other motorcyclists for my cue to go back down to the vehicle deck where we prepared to disembark. Given the sign from the dock workers, all of the motorcycles fired up to depart. I just love that sound. Let's go ride!
